Appendix: Embedding Images in the Source Document

When you create a Dynamic Document Item using a file with embedded images, KnowledgeKube will convert those images into Image Items. Items created in this way will appear in the Image Information tab alongside any that have been uploaded manually.

A marker referencing the embedded image will appear in the document item, and will remain there even if the corresponding image item is removed. For this reason, if you no longer want an embedded image to appear in your dynamic document, you should remove it from the source file and then refresh the document item. Bear in mind that you do not need to delete the image item from KnowledgeKube, and you can still reference it using embedded Image fields, as described in Using a Field to Reference an Image.

An image item created using an embedded image will be given an automatically-generated name based on the name of the source document. For example, if your source document is called SampleDocument.docx and it contains two embedded JPEG images, two image items would be created and given the names SampleDocument.001.jpeg and SampleDocument.002.jpeg, respectively.

Image items are stored as either JPEG or PNG files. If the original image is of a different file type, it will be converted into a PNG file when uploaded.

If a particular image is embedded in a source document more than once, only one item will be created for it, rather than a separate one for each occurrence. Making changes to the embedded image inside the document - for example, changing its dimensions - will not cause KnowledgeKube to consider it a different image; rather, the resized one will be rendered with its new dimensions when the document item is used to generate an output file.

You do not have any control over the appearance of an embedded image - including its dimensions - after uploading a source document. For this reason, you may find it useful to upload the image (either by uploading the source document or by separately uploading the image file to the resulting document item), then modify and re-upload the source document so it contains an Image field instead of the image itself.
